Systematic Investigation of Resorcin[4]arene-Based Cavitands as Affinity Materials on Quartz Crystal Microbalances.

Resorcin[4]arene cavitands are well-known supramolecular hosts, and their outstanding guest-binding abilities in solution have been studied in detail in recent decades. In a systematic approach, different resorcin[4]arene cavitands and container molecules are characterized as affinity materials for gravimetric sensing using high-fundamental-frequency quartz crystal microbalances. Analysis of their affinity toward a series of various analytes reveals a remarkable dependence of both selectivity and sensitivity on the shape, accessibility, and size of the cavity, along with their supramolecular interactions with the host molecules.

Application of Rigidity-Controlled Supramolecular Affinity Materials for the Gravimetric Detection of Hazardous and Illicit Compounds.

The combination of an (-)-isosteviol-derived building block and 9,9'-spirobifluorene or tetraphenylmethane generated highly potent new affinity materials for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Comparison of their affinity behaviour with different core structures showed remarkable influence on selectivity and sensitivity due to structural rigidity and their pre-organization. Their unique supramolecular properties were investigated in an affinity assay using high fundamental frequency quartz crystal microbalances.

Estimating parameters for global climate models via combined active and passive microwave remote sensing data has been a subject of intensive research in recent years. A variety of retrieval algorithms has been proposed for the estimation of soil moisture, vegetation optical depth and other parameters. A novel attenuation-based retrieval approach is proposed here to globally estimate the gravimetric moisture of vegetation (m g ) and retrieve information about the amount of water [kg] per amount of wet vegetation [kg]. Our objective was to relate the bolus properties (fragmentation, moisture content and viscosity) of chewed extruded pea snacks to their structure. Conifer Needles as Thermoplastic Composite Fillers: Structure and Properties

This study describes the properties of thermoplastic polymer composites based on polyethylene (of low and high density) and ethylene-propylene copolymers using various types of conifer needles (pine, spruce, fir, and cedar) as fillers. For the needles, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA/FTIR) were performed to investigate their structures and thermal resistance, as required for the composite processing methods. Water Structure in Proteins in Solid State Studied by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Water adsorption in proteins is the crucial process of protein folding and structure stabilizing. Adsorption of water on proteins can be evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy, a useful technique for observing combination frequency of a water molecule. In this work, albumin, lysozyme, and silk, were used as models for α-helix and β-pleated sheet proteins. Residual water and electrical properties of polyaniline

The work aims to study the mechanism of interaction between water molecules and polyaniline (PANI) backbone as an important constituent of acid-base transformations ensuring good conductive properties of PANI. Experiments have been made using chemically synthesized emeraldine base subjected to different chemical treatments and aging procedures. Abstract The present work proposes an experimental optical methodology able to measure the transient swelling stresses induced by the water uptake ageing of polymers. In particular, the work describes the implementation of a Photoelastic technique to quantify internal stresses arising during the hydrothermal ageing of cast epoxy samples. The material investigated is a model DGEBA/DDS epoxy system. A series of novel dendritic steroidal polyesters of first and second generation has been synthesized in convergent fashion by the use of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as a repeating unit.
